Week Three Preview

It’s already week three of the season and for some teams they are already on a roll while others are looking to gain momentum.

Olympic Club vs. OMBAC (1:00 p.m. pt; Treasure Island; Live on USARugbyTV

The battle between Olympic Club and OMBAC is the first match of a double-header at Treasure Island this weekend. Olympic Club come into the match with an 0-2 record but arguably should have had a win against Belmont Shore last week if it weren’t for a late intercept try that went against them. That close match came even with Eagles players Alec Gletzer and Jake Anderson missing. Olympic Club will hope to have gained confidence from the closer result and returning to home should play like they have nothing to lose.

OMBAC come into the match disappointed by their showing against Glendale last weekend. The recipe was right for an OMBAC win but their offense sputtered and they allowed Glendale to push in a big score. OMBAC are a better team than that but now with a loss on the season they put pressure on themselves to play well the rest of the way.

SFGG Rhinos vs. Denver Barbarians (3:00 p.m. pt; Treasure Island; Live on USARugbyTV)

In the second match of the double-header the SFGG Rhinos will host the Denver Barbarians. The Rhinos are 2-0 to start the season and have notched wins over Santa Monica and Belmont Shore. Relying on a core group of veterans that continually carry them through matches it will be up to the Rhinos to not look past Denver this week and to their match against Glendale in week four. SFGG did lose a key player recently when Jack Halalilo went down with injury and they’ll need players like Pila Huihui to take a step up.

The Barbarians played the first week of the season, losing big to OMBAC, but had week two off. The Barbarians were missing the influential Max De Achaval in week one and if he’s back that will give the Barbarians a solid attacking threat. If he’s missing once again they are going to have to find a catalyst.

Santa Monica vs. Glendale Raptors (3:00 p.m. pt; Daniel Webster Middle School)

The Dolphins fought hard against SFGG in their season opener last week and they face another very difficult task this week as they play the Glendale Raptors. Santa Monica can score but defense still seems to be a major issue. The Raptors haven’t had much trouble scoring but this is their fourth weekend in a row on the road if you count their pre-season match against Seattle. Eventually that is going to take a toll.
