As finalists in the first two years of the competition the SFGG Rhinos enter the 2016 season with targets on their back. One of the teams that is gunning to take them down this year is Belmont Shore who made the trip to Treasure Island hoping to pick up an early season win. In what was a tight and tense affair it took a second half surge from SFGG to win 24-6.
The first scoring came four minutes into the match as Volney Rouse, last year’s leading point scorer, kicked a penalty to put the Rhinos up 3-0. That lead didn’t last long however, as Andy Jackson kicked a penalty for Belmont three minutes later. Jackson would then add a second penalty 27 minutes into the match to put Belmont Shore up 6-3. That was responded to by a second Rouse penalty to put the match at 6-6 into the break.
The match only shifted in the second half when Golden Gate were able to finally put separation between them and Belmont Shore. Two more penalties from Rouse put SFGG up 12-6 and then about fifteen minutes from time Number 8 Ricky Reynolds scored the first try of the match. Wing Luke Watson would seal things with a try just a handful of minutes from the end of the match.
Next up SFGG make the trip to Santa Monica while Belmont Shore host Olympic Club.
